WordPress Proudly Reinstalls Twenty Twenty-Whatever Theme You Deleted 14 Times
AUSTIN, TX — Confirming that your previous decisions were merely “suggestions,” WordPress announced Thursday that its latest core update has once again installed a brand-new default theme nobody asked for.
“Congratulations on successfully updating WordPress,” read the dashboard notification. “As part of this important security release, we have restored Twenty Twenty-Whatever, the theme you deleted immediately after the last update.”
The theme reportedly arrived moments after the update completed, settling comfortably into /wp-content/themes/ like a relative who still has a key to your house.
Website administrators confirmed they had removed the previous default theme months ago because the site already had a functioning custom theme, a child theme, a staging environment, backups, and absolutely no conceivable reason to keep a block theme named after the current calendar year.
WordPress disagreed.
“We noticed you had only one active theme installed,” explained WordPress Core, slowly pushing Twenty Twenty-Whatever back across the table. “That seemed lonely.”
Developers say the cycle has become an important part of modern WordPress maintenance:
- Update WordPress.
- Check site.
- Check plugins.
- Clear cache.
- Notice Twenty Twenty-Whatever has returned.
- Delete Twenty Twenty-Whatever.
- Wonder briefly whether deleting it is somehow dangerous.
- Google it.
- Confirm it is fine.
- Repeat in three weeks.
“It’s actually reassuring,” said one developer. “Every time I see that default theme reappear, I know the update worked.”
WordPress officials stressed that the theme serves an important fallback purpose in the unlikely event a site’s active theme catastrophically fails.
Asked why WordPress therefore needs to reinstall it after a site administrator deliberately removes it, officials stared silently into the middle distance.
At press time, administrators who deleted Twenty Twenty-Whatever were reportedly preparing for WordPress 7.2, which will introduce Twenty Twenty-Seven, reinstall Twenty Twenty-Six, and somehow reactivate Hello Dolly.
